6 Ways to Come into Adulthood Before 2017

I often look in awe of my mother and wonder how she managed to run a home, raise three children and have a career. Meanwhile I can’t even find a pair of matching socks and cook at least one meal a day.
I have been reflecting a lot lately and realising how different our lives are to that of our parents and grandparents. While we have unlimited access to information and communication with whoever we want, whenever we want, we seem starved (literally), disorganised and as irresponsible as ever.
We are caught in this rat race, distracted by social media, falling behind our goals, never really having a right of passage into “adulthood”.
While that sounds all so serious, here are some practical ideas to make you feel on top of your adult-game (but no games, you’re an adult now damn it!), by getting back to basics in your home and personal life:

1. Do a spring clean (and help others at the same time.)

Whether your winter is warming up, or your summer is sadly ending, now is the perfect time to throw out that junk. You know, the clothes you haven’t worn in seven years, the plethora of unused bags, sunglasses, shoes and bits and bobs that fill your draws. Simplifying your home is the best way to feel in control of your life and mind. All the while you can help people by giving your unused goods to charity. There are charity bins scattered around most cities and suburbs, just have a quick google search!
The other option for those wanted to earn a bit of cash, is band together with your friends, (spreading the adulthoodism), and hold a garage sale one Saturday.
Alternatively chuck them on ebay and try your luck!

2. Start planning gift ideas and a budget for Christmas

Let’s be honest, most shops have already got christmas decorations on display and you’re already thinking about it, even though it’s still five months away.
Your budget doesn’t need to be massive, but putting in extra thought and care this year, will make you feel accomplished and adulty, while your fam and friends are going to love you for it!
A great gift idea is putting together little hampers, which means you can start collecting bits and pieces from now until silly season!

3. Hold a dinner party

Stepping into adulthood with a glass of wine and a candle-lit dinner is a smashing idea, if I do say so myself. Impress your friends this month and cook them a feast.
Stew some mulled wine if it’s winter or make some refreshing cocktails for summer.
Try out your cooking skills, table decorating and event co-ordination and you’ll be feeling grown in no time!!

5. Get a 6-12 month plan

I made a decision this year to save a certain amount of money, and I have almost achieved my goal simply because it has been in the back of mind when spending money – so I’ve been more careful and less wasteful.
Whether your plan involves money, career growth or change, practicing or learning a new skill, having a plan with small and large goals will absolutely keep you on track.
Remember you aren’t a robot. It is okay to screw up and be inconsistent, but having a plan will keep you on track. Read this article for good apps for planning!

Speaking of goals. Learning a new skill or hobby is going to make you feel like a bad-ass over-achieving adult. Getting out of your comfort zone takes courage, but you will be so happy you took the step.
A new language, a team sport, a dance class are a few ideas that will be stimulating, fun, exciting and social. You could do something online, but personally human contact is what we are lacking most, so why not make the most of the spare time you have and get out there! P.s Yes you do have spare time, Facebook is just currently using it up. 😉

5. Get into D.I.Y

Paint a wall, build something, anything! And contribute to the transformation of your home. Buying stuff is expensive, so a trip to Bunnings can lower your costs and get your in your creative realm. Here are a few idea to spice up your home with low cost and lots of fun and accomplishment:
– Revamp your kitchen or lounge room and sew some pillows, curtains or table cloths
– Tidy up and build some shelves for extra storage or better display
– Paint the inside or outside of your home. (I did this recently..IT MADE A HUGE DIFFERENCE).
– Re-arrange your home for the feng-shui.

What do you do to feel like you’ve really adulting?! Would love to hear.
